DSM Chartered Accountants business news update 2nd June 2020 – Local Authority Discretionary Grant Fund

From 1st June local councils have each received a discretionary grant fund from government, to be awarded to any businesses who are not eligible for any local council and/or specialised covid-19 grant support already in place.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-the-coronavirus-local-authority-discretionary-grants-fund#eligibility

Main headlines are :-

  • The Government says grants of up to £25,000 can be awarded but we have already seen some councils capping grants at £5,000. Grant amounts will be at the discretion of each local council’s priorities and volume of applications.

  • To be eligible your business must have fewer than 50 employees, have been trading before 11th March 2020, still trading and have building costs, such as paying rent.

  • Businesses who will receive priority for this grant include bed & breakfasts, market stall traders, those in small multi-occupation units (who probably don’t pay individual rates) and charities with premises.

  • The deadline for applications depends on each council but we can see varies across councils between Monday 8th June and Friday 19th June.

  • The grant will form part of your taxable income for tax year 2020/21.

  • The online applications are directly with your local council, so a few local grant application links are :-
